Election filings set to open for municipal and township offices

Next Tuesday, July 29, marks the opening of filing for Carlton County’s municipal and school district elections for which a primary is not necessary. Candidates must file with municipal or school district clerks. The filing period ends at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12. The deadline for withdrawing is 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14.
Several cities in the county will be electing mayors this year, including Barnum, Carlton, Cromwell, Kettle River, Moose Lake, Scanlon, Thomson, Wrenshall and Wright.
Townships with openings on this year’s ballot for town supervisors include: Atkinson (two at-large), Automba (seats A and C), Barnum (two at-large), Beseman (seats A and C), Blackhoof (two at-large), Eagle (seat A), Holyoke (seats A and B), Kalevala (seat B), Mahtowa (seats A and C), Moose Lake (seats A and C), Perch Lake (seats A and C), Silver (two at-large), Silver Brook (two at-large), Skelton (seat C), Split Rock (seat A), Thomson (seats B and E), Twin Lakes (seats A and B) and Wrenshall (seats B and C).
Treasurer positions will be up for election in the townships of Atkinson, Automba, Barnum, Beseman, Blackhoof, Holyoke, Mahtowa, Moose Lake, Perch Lake, Silver, Silver Brook, Split Rock and Wrenshall.
Cities with openings for council members include Barnum (two), Cromwell (two), Kettle River (two), Moose Lake (two), Scanlon (two), Wrenshall (two) and Wright (two).
Electing town clerks at this year’s election will be the townships of Eagle, Holyoke, Kalevala and Skelton.
The following school districts in the county will have multiple openings for board members: Barnum (three), Carlton (three, plus a special election for one unexpired term), Cloquet (three), Moose Lake (three), Esko (three) and Wrenshall (three).
Numerous posts will also be open on the Mercy Hospital Board of Directors. These positions file with the appropriate city/township clerk, and the candidates must reside in the city/township they are to represent. The openings are in the city of Kettle River, city of Barnum, Silver Township, Windemere Township (Pine County) and an at-large position. The at-large spot is elected by all the cities/townships within the hospital district.
