The U.S. Department of Commerce announced its Economic Development Administration awarded the Cloquet Carlton County Airport a $1.2 million grant Friday, Sept. 18.
The EDA grant will fund the construction of a new hangar to serve as a base for an aeronautics workforce training center. The hangar and training center are estimated to create nearly 40 jobs and spur $3.5 million in private investment, according to a DOC press release.
The grant will be matched by nearly $300,000 from the state of Minnesota and more than $14,000 in local funds.
“The Cloquet Carlton County Airport is already a tremendous asset for the region, as local businesses frequently rely on it to engage in commerce,” Rep. Pete Stauber (R-Hermantown) said in the release. “Given the popularity of this key transportation hub, increased hangar space has become necessary, and these funds will help address this growing need while creating valuable opportunities for the local workforce.”
