The Carlton School Board has voted to appoint former Cloquet High School Principal Warren Peterson as the interim principal of the middle and high schools.

During the meeting Monday, Sept. 16, board members also voted to accept the resignation of current principal Barry Fischer.

Fischer was hired as the assistant principal at Lincoln Park Middle School in Duluth. He informed the district of his impending departure earlier in September.

Peterson retired as an administrator at Cloquet High School in June 2018 after 20 years in the position.

When asked, Peterson said he isn't interested in serving in the role until the end of the year, according to Superintendent Gwen Carman.

School Board Vice Chair Ann Gustafson was the only member to vote "no" on the hire.

”I just wanted to say it’s nothing against Mr. Peterson, but in the discussion at the previous meeting, there was some disagreement as far as filling the admin position,” Gustafson said. “We are considered overstaffed in that capacity ... it’s a tricky time with all the stuff going on, but it’s also a tricky time with the budget.”

Gustafson suggested Carman take over administrative duties at South Terrace Elementary School and South Terrace Principal Ben Midge move to the middle and high school.

Carman said she has already received six applications for the permanent position.

Board sets levy to maximum

Also during the meeting Monday, the board certified the 2020 preliminary levy to the maximum allowed by the state, an action recommended by the Minnesota Department of Education.

MDE has yet to determine the amount. Once the 2020-21 preliminary budget is complete, the levy can be adjusted down but it can’t be raised.

The board also set its Truth in Taxation meeting for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at Carlton High School.
