Barnum High School Commencement exercises were Friday, June 1, at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium.
The high school band, under the direction of Jeff Gilbertson, played the processional and recessional for the 2018 graduates. The high school band also played "Novo Lenio" by Samuel Hazo. The high school choir, directed by Lori Koski, sang "May It Be," arranged by Mark Brymer.
Student speakers were Rachael Barnes, "welcome;" Emily Miletich, "past;" Colton Zambory, "tribute;" and Quinn Casey, "future."
Superintendent David Bottem presented awards to Emily McLellan, Nathan Moore Attendance Award, and Andrew Anderson and Lea Peterson, American Legion Auxiliary Good Citizenship Award. Bottem also announced the induction of Monte Wilkes into to the BHS Hall of Fame.
Principal Brian Kazmierczak presented the male athlete of the year award to Drake Weets and the female athlete of the year award to Emily Miletich. Receiving the John Philip Sousa Music award were Trevor Houck and Rylie Platt.
Kazmierczak and social studies teacher Kari Johnson presented the 52 graduates. Diplomas were distributed by Jessica Unkelhaeuser and Paul Coughlin of the Barnum Board of Education.
Rachael Barnes, daughter of Cindy and John Barnes, was announced as valedictorian and Brendan Lake, son of Kelly and Rick Lake, was announced as salutatorian.
Julieanna Sullivan and Elizabeth Carlson both earned their Associate of Arts degree along with their high school diplomas.
Juniors Max Salzer, Jessica Schatz, Jennette Schmitt and Alan Sebring served as honor ushers.
Miniature diplomas and special 2018 coins, courtesy of Education Minnesota, Barnum, were presented by elementary teachers Amanda Nordstrom and Sarah MacDonald.
Graduates with distinction require a cumulative grade-point average of 3.8 or above, while graduates to be named as honor students must have obtained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
