An apartment building in Carlton burned early Thursday morning, leaving about 12 people homeless. Carlton schools and county courthouse were closed for the day due to a lack of water after it was diverted to fight the fire.
Two women, one who lived in the building, were arrested yesterday in connection with the fire.
Carlton County Sheriff Kelly Lake reported that a fire call came at approximately 3:10 a.m. about the building at 221 Chestnut Avenue in Carlton, next to Third Base Bar, which also suffered damage.
Deputies responded to the multi-level building and observed flames coming out the roof. Firefighters from nine area fire departments battled the blaze, which began with a grease fire in an apartment in the northeast corner of the building.
Carlton County Sheriff's Deputies, Cloquet Police Officers and State Troopers evacuated the building and no injuries were reported.
