Donald R. Sheetz, 83, of rural Carlton died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, in his home on Lac LaBelle at Twin Lakes near Carlton, with his wife of 60 years by his side. Donald was born Jan. 28, 1923, to Harry E. and Rowena (Hammitt) Sheetz at the log home of his grandparents in Pleasant Valley near Wrenshall. After living in Duluth and Michigan, he settled in 1940 with his parents on the historic Scott Farm (now Scott House) on Lac LaBelle. He graduated from Wrenshall High School in 1942. Donald served in the United States Army in World War II stationed in the South Pacific and Australia. He was united in marriage to Doris Eng on May 4, 1946, in Carlton. Donald was an active local businessman, including owning and operating Don Sheetz Oil Company and Don Sheetz Enterprises. He was an Elder and longtime member of J.M. Paine Presbyterian Church and the Cloquet Dalles Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Marilyn Brown.
Donald is survived by his wife, Doris M.; children, Kathryn (Gerald) Nisula of Carlton, Diana (James) Carlson of Woodbury, Minn., Thomas (Renee Beck) Sheetz of New Richmond, Wis., and James Sheetz of Carlton; grandchildren, Nicholas (Allison) Carlson, Dawn (Arlo) Lehtinen, Aaron Sheetz, Jason (Jada) Sheetz, Christina Sheetz and her fiancé Shawn Froeming, Christian Carlson and Marty Sheetz; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald "Buzz" (Marilyn) Sheetz; a niece and a nephew.
Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 12, from 5-7 p.m. in J.M. Paine Presbyterian Church, 506 Chestnut Avenue, Carlton, and will resume Saturday, Jan. 13, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service, which will be held at the Cloquet Presbyterian Church, 47 Fourth Street, Cloquet. Spring interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Carlton.
