Depth may give CEC ski team

The snow has yet to really fly, but that isn't deterring the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton alpine ski teams from preparing for the season. The Jacks have been working on getting in shape and tuned up for a busy ski season ahead.

"We have been putting in our conditioning work so we'll be ready to hit it hard once the hill opens up to us," mentioned CEC coach Ryan Zimny. "I'm really looking forward to working with this group. They are just a fabulous crew to work with and I really enjoy the positive attitudes they bring."

Look for the CEC girls to be led by senior Eliza Grames, junior Katrina Anderson and freshman Kelsey Anderson.

"I am expecting some great performances with our depth and I think many of the skiers who came out for the first time last year will start putting together some solid runs," commented Zimny. "There has been a change in the section meet procedures that should give us an opportunity to see more of our skiers making it to the state meet."

Another key to the program is the work of assistant coach Katy Green who was singled out by coach Zimny.

"Katy does an amazing job in working with our younger skiers," explained Zimny. "We have 11 seventh-graders joining us and it will be a lot of fun to see them develop into ski racers."

If depth means anything, the CEC boys team should have a chance to surprise many top section teams this year.

"We are returning everyone from last year," said Zimny. "We also have a large crew of young skiers joining us this year to make up the largest team we've had in 20 years."

The top skiers returning are seniors Nick Grames and Kyle Manney as well as juniors John Green and Tanner Franklin.

"I am expecting to see some good performances across the board," mentioned Zimny.
