With just four minutes to go until halftime the Wrenshall Wrens held a 1-point lead over the Cromwell Cards in high school football Friday night, but an untimely miscue allowed the Cards to get in the end zone and take the momentum - and eventually come away with 50-28 home win.

"Wrenshall came out and really took it to us to start the game," recalled Jeff Gronner, head coach of the Cards. "We just could not stop them. On the other hand they could not stop us either."

Jordan Berglund got the Wrens on the board on their first drive when caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from John Moder, making it 6-0. The Cards gained a 7-6 lead when Shale Korpela scored on a 12-yard run, but then things got crazy.

"We ended up getting called for intentional grounding for a safety," explained Gronner. "After we kicked off to them they scored on the first play, giving them the momentum. We were down by nine points with about four minutes to go in the half."

Following the safety, and on their first offensive play from scrimmage, it was Joseph Holmes bolting in from 56 yards out. Sebastian Hamm made the extra point kick for a 14-7 score in favor of Wrenshall.

Cromwell responded with a quick drive that ended when Adam Smith scored from the 17-yard line and then Jordan Suhonen ran in the two-point conversion cutting the lead to 22-21, but that's when the wheels came off the wagon for the Wrens.

"We fumbled on our next possession with 30 seconds left in the half," stated Wrens coach Jeremy Zywicki. "Then we gave up a big play down the field which they eventually scored on."

Cromwell took a 28-22 lead when Suhonen scored on a 5-yard run with time running out in the first half.

Suhonen added another 5-yard run in the third quarter and Smith followed with a 5-yard scamper that pushed the Cards lead to 40-22 at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Cards got a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Suhonen, his third touchdown of the game, and then Jordan Smith booted a 33-yard field goal for Cromwell's final points of the game.

Wrenshall wrapped up the scoring when Moder crashed in from the 1-yard line.

"Cromwell is a well-coached team, but we were right there," commented Zywicki. "Defensively we were very flat and couldn't stop anything Cromwell was doing. Offensively we moved the ball very well."
