A man is in custody at the Carlton County Jail after being accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl last year.
Timothy Scott Young Jr., 38, was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a victim under 16 years old in a complaint filed in November in 6th Judicial District Court. He was recently arrested in the state of Washington, according to Carlton County Attorney Lauri Ketola, and he was brought to the Carlton County Jail Tuesday, Jan. 12.
According to the complaint, Young knew the victim, who was 14 years old at the time. The alleged assault took place in April, the complaint complaint said, and the girl told police Young threatened to hurt her if she told anyone.
The girl reported the assault to her guardian. Instead of reporting it to police, he told her if she wanted the assault reported, she needed to do it herself.
The assault was reported in August and during an interview, the girl's guardian confirmed that she and Young knew each other and that he observed them alone on a number of occasions, He also confirmed the girl reported the assault to him, but he failed to notify law enforcement and had told her to report it herself, the complaint said.
In an interview with police, Young acknowledged spending time alone with the girl, but he denied sexually assaulting her.
In 2007, Young was convicted of second-degree sexual assault of a child in Douglas County, Wisconsin. As a result of the conviction, he was required to register as a predatory offender.
The complaint said as of Oct. 29, Young was not compliant with the predatory offender registration.
Young is being held at the Carlton County Jail on $30,000 bail and faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, a $40,000 fine or both. He is scheduled to make his initial appearance in court Wednesday, Jan. 20.
