The Cloquet girls track team had some strong showings in the Class AA Section 7 Girls Track Meet held last week in Elk River, Minn. Grand Rapids won the girls event with 103 points while the Lumberjacks finished sixth in a 14-team field with 60 points.

Cloquet was led by Jes Vork who qualified for the state meet by winning the high jump and anchoring the 4x200 relay.

"Jes just had a great day," explained Cloquet coach Tim Prosen. "She won the high jump at 5 feet 3 inches and anchored the 4x200 relay, passing several people in the last 100 meters to win the event."

Vork was able to run down the anchors from both St. Francis and Forest Lake to win the event with a time of 1 minute 48.30 seconds.

"Liz and Kait have really stepped up this year to help make the team competitive," suggested Prosen. "We knew we would have a few good 200-meter runners, but we thought we were short one to push to state," Prosen said. "Both have stepped up to make the state meet a reality."

The other key ingredient to the relay win was the talented Taylor Sautbine who also qualified to go to state by taking second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.2 seconds.

"Taylor showed huge improvement in the past three weeks," commented Prosen. "She has become a force in the hurdles."

The other force in the hurdles is senior Montana Vichorek who won the 300-meter hurdles in an incredible comeback race.

"Montana was nearly in last place with about 100 meters to go," recalled Prosen. "In true Montana fashion, she passed everyone in the last 100 meters and out-fought them at the end to get the win."

Vork narrowly missed state in the 100-meter dash by finishing just one tenth of a second out of second place in a time of 12.8 seconds. She also placed seventh in the 200-meter dash.

Becca Sorenson just missed out on state in the 3,200-meter run by finishing third just one tenth behind. The top two finishers in individual events head to the state meet. Sorenson was eighth in the 1,600-meter run and Amy Campbell of Cloquet was fourth in that same event.

Proulx added an eighth place finish in the 400-meter dash and Halee Peterson took ninth in the 800 meter run.

The 4x400 relay team of Proulx, Sorenson, Campbell and Peterson finished with a strong sixth place finish.
