Luke Heine, a senior at Cloquet High School, and Rebekah Meyer, a senior Chisago Lakes, have been selected to represent Region 7AA in the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award program, announced Doug MacIver, region secretary for the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL)
Established in 1988, the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award (Triple "A" Award) is sponsored by the MSHSL. The award goes to high school seniors who have a "B" or better grade point average and who participate in League-sponsored athletic and fine arts activities.
Both seniors are active members in a variety of MSHSL, school and community activities.
Heine maintained a 4.116 weighted-scale grade point average. He has challenged himself academically with a daily schedule of six College-in-the Schools classes. He placed fifth at the state Knowledge Bowl competition. In the ACT, Heine scored in the nation's top 1 percent. He is a four-year member of the band and participated in the MSHSL Solo/Ensemble for three years, earning excellent ratings; as a junior he received a superior rating in Visual Arts. Heine is a three-year varsity member of the cross country team and was captain his senior year. He is also a four-year varsity member of the tennis team and is also on the track team. He has given back to his school and community: conducting ACT/SAT seminars and mentoring, participating in a 150-mile cycling tour for multiple sclerosis research, and creating and hosting the Northland Frisbee Invite, donating all proceeds to the R.E.A.C.H. Mentorship Program which is a charity serving local disadvantaged youth. Heine will attend Yale University and pursue a degree in chemistry. His parents are Ruth and Rick Heine.
Triple "A" Award recipients are selected by a multi-level process involving the League's member schools and administrative regions. League officials will announce the four award recipients (a girl and a boy from both a Class "A" and Class "AA" school) at an on-court recognition ceremony held on Saturday, March 23. Each award recipient will receive a four-year $1,000 scholarship.
