According to the complaint, officers met with the victim, who stated a red SUV pulled into his driveway and was sitting there for a while. He went out to see who it was and said five people were in the SUV, including Barney, a relative of the victim.

Barney got out of the vehicle, brandished a knife and demanded the victim hand over his phone.

The victim refused and told Barney if they weren’t related he would take the knife and “kick the (expletive) out of him.”

At that point, the SUV drove away, leaving Barney in the driveway. Barney again demanded the victim’s phone. When he refused, Barney left the area.

Barney is being held at the Carlton County jail and if convicted faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a $30,000 fine or both.
