After a hiatus of 25 years of teams qualifying for the State Knowledge Bowl Tournament, Cloquet High School is sending another team for the second year in a row. The CHS Varsity Knowledge Bowl team qualified for the state meet by capping off their perfect season with a first-place win at the Tier 1 Regional Tournament March 19. They also won each of their three meets to qualify for the regional tournament.
The team is comprised of seniors Will Riihiluoma and Luke Heine and juniors Jackson Fossen, Joshua Dowell and Jeshuah Peterson. The team is coached by Mary Jacobson.
Riihiluoma and Heine competed last year at State and decided at that point they wanted to go back again to compete at the state level. They had the right combination of team members and got the job done again! The team will compete in the State Knowledge Bowl meet on April 11-12.
Regional meets are divided into two tiers with the large-population schools competing in Tier 1 and the small-population schools competing in Tier 2. There are approximately 800 teams statewide that compete in Knowledge Bowl each year, with 130 from our region alone. The top 48 teams qualify for state from the 11 various regions of Minnesota. The qualifying teams are ranked according to their school population and then split in half to determine which tier the schools will compete in.
This year, Cloquet will compete in the top level, Class AA (Tier 1). The regional meets and tournaments for this area are all held at the Northeast Service Cooperative in Mountain Iron. The State Knowledge Bowl Tournament is held each year at Cragun's Resort in Brainerd.
