It hasn't taken long for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton (CEC) boys soccer team to get into the meat of their schedule. At the end of last week the Jacks faced two of their top Lake Superior Conference rivals and split a pair of games that should help them prepare for the end of the season and playoff time. On Monday, the Lumberjacks came away with a tight win over Two Harbors.

The Jacks found things tight defensively against the Hermantown Hawks on Thursday, however. Playing at home, CEC kept things deadlocked, and scoreless, with Hermantown through the first half. In the second half, the Hawks grabbed some momentum on back-to-back goals just four minutes apart. Jacob Black scored in the 57th minute and Brandon Crusan pumped in a goal in the 61st minute to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The Lumberjacks bounced back on a goal by Josiah Barrett in the 69th minute with a pretty assist going to Tony Wilcox. The goal by Barrett cut the lead to 2-1.

Hawk goalie Andrew Samberg shut the door the rest of the way to preserve a key victory in conference play for Hermantown. Meanwhile, CEC goalie Jordan Tucker finished with 13 saves on 15 shots.

  • Following the Thursday loss to Hermantown, the Lumberjacks came back to defeat Duluth Central Saturday 1-0 at home.

Central has had a resurgence in their program this season and earlier picked up some impressive victories over Hermantown, Duluth Marshall, Proctor and Duluth Denfeld.
On Saturday, the Lumberjacks had a strong first half, but were unable to get anything by Trojan goalie Matt Erickson. On the other end of the field it was Tucker standing strong in the nets for CEC. Tucker finished with a shutout and 16 saves for the Jacks.

The only goal of the game came suddenly when CEC's Dan Toivonen rammed home a Barrett pass in the 75th minute. The play happened quickly and many fans missed the goal. It seemed the Trojans had a chance to clear the ball from deep in their own zone, only to have Barrett make a strong play to Toivonen.

  • On Monday the Lumberjacks improved to 5-2 on the season with a 1-0 win against a much improved Two Harbors Agate squad.

After a scoreless first half, the Lumberjacks picked up a goal from Landon Straub in the 75th minute with Jeff Lindemood notching an assist.
Tucker finished with just three saves and picked up his second consecutive shutout. It was a busy day for Two Harbors goaltender, Aaron Lee, who wracked up 12 saves on 13 shots.
