The Carlton VFW Third Annual Golf Tournament was held at 29 Pine Golf Course in Mahtowa on June 28. The four-person scramble tournament was a rousing success and it raised money for a good cause.
This year the tournament raised money for Christmas food, gifts and other items for area families of soldiers serving in Iraq.
"It was just a great day of golf and we couldn't be happier with how things turned out," said tournament coordinator Casey Zoltek. "Everyone had a lot of fun and the tournament came off as smooth as could be."
First place in the tournament was captured by a team consisting of Larry Axtell, Brian Olson, Dave Hearst and Ronnie Hill. Second place went to the team of Dave Swenson, Yvonne Swenson, Eve Dancer and Randy Hedlund.
"The first place team won Giants Ridge golf passes and the second place team won passes to Apostle Highlands Golf in Bayfield," mentioned Zoltek. "I was extremely happy with all the golfers and especially the way all our sponsors stepped in. We had passes from just about every golf course in the area and we gave away over $3,000 worth of golf passes alone during the event."

"Closest to Pin" honors for the women went to Diane Gustafson, the longest putt on No. 7 went to Audrey Seboe and the longest drive on No. 2 went to Patti Schmitz.
Larry Axtell won the longest putt for the men and Randy Hedlund won the longest drive.
"We managed to raise over $1,500 for the Carlton VFW to help out these families," Zoltek commented. "We spent a lot of time putting this together, so it was great to see it come out the way it did."
In all, 72 golfers participated in this year's sold-out tournament and many other prizes were given out including drivers, putters and all types of golf accessories.
