Carlton to host annual toast to summer

The action will be nearly non-stop this weekend as the busy little city of Carlton tackles an ambitious agenda of fun with its annual Carlton Daze celebration.

The action will be nearly non-stop this weekend as the busy little city of Carlton tackles an ambitious agenda of fun with its annual Carlton Daze celebration.

The streets will begin to fill up on Friday with the community garage sales from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Maps are available at local businesses beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday.

The Carlton Fire Hall will host a Library Book and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and registration and pre-registration packet pick up for the 22nd Annual 5K Run/Walk is set for 3-5:45 p.m. at the Four Seasons Event Center. Then stick around for the spaghetti feed from 4-8 p.m., bingo at the VFW from 4-9 p.m., and race packet pickup for the Ultra Marathon from 4-7 p.m. at Four Seasons.

Carlton VFW members will present a flag ceremony at the Post at 4:45 p.m., and Carlton Community Education will sponsor a Handmade/Homegrown Market from 5-9 p.m. at Four Seasons. While there, be sure the kids take part in the Fun Races for ages 4 and 5 and 6 and 7 (sign-up is 3:45-4:45 p.m.).

The 5K Run/Walk will get underway at Four Seasons at 6 p.m. and the Third Base Softball Tournament will begin at 6 p.m.


Dance the evening away to live music at Third Base from 9 p.m. to close and the VFW from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Saturday’s events start early with check-in for the Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultra 50-mile Foot Race at 5 a.m., with the starting gun at 6 a.m. sharp.

A Pancake Breakfast will take place at Four Seasons from 6:30-11 a.m., with proceeds going to the Robert C. Rodd Memorial Scholarship Fund.  The Volleyball Tournament starts play at 8 a.m., and the Handmade/Homegrown Market reopens its doors at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m.

The Army National Guard will host a climbing wall at Four Seasons from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Carlton Daze Golf Tournament is scheduled to tee off at Pine Hill Golf at 10 a.m.

The street in front of the Carlton VFW will be the site of the annual Carlton Daze Car Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with awards to be presented at 1 p.m. There will be no parking on that block beginning at 7 a.m. The Historic Scott House will hold an open house and art show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Carlton Area Lions will sponsor a tent in the Four Seasons parking lot from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring a memorabilia table and display cabinet, a diabetes screening table by Community Memorial Hospital, healthy snacks, donor cards and an eye bank presentation, an eye glass donation box, a fire truck, a service/leader dog presentation, kids activities and raffle ticket sales.

The Lions Auction is set to get underway at 11 a.m., and there will be bingo from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., a Texas Hold’em Tournament at noon, and a horseshoe tournament at noon, all at the VFW.

The Carlton Daze Committee will have a decorating booth available at noon at Four Seasons to assist kids in decorating their bikes or wagons for the Kids Parade, which will get underway at 1 p.m. down Carlton’s main street to the Four Seasons Event Center (the parade will be held inside the complex in the event of rain).

CLIMB Theater, a group of talented local actors, will present a play at Four Seasons at 1:30 p.m., and there will be live music as part of the Songwriter Series at The Streetcar beginning at 2 p.m. Kids of all ages are invited to listen to the Teddy Bear Band at 2:30 p.m. at Four Seasons. Bring Your Own Bear (BYOB) to the event!


The Friends of the Library group is planning a Bake Walk at 3:30 p.m. in the Four Seasons parking lot, and there will be a Family Movie Night at Four Seasons at 5 p.m. Bring your own chairs and blankets, and concessions will be available.

The Carlton High School volleyball team will roll out the ducks for the popular Duck Races on Otter Creek at 2 p.m., and there will be a Disc Golf Tournament at the disc golf range near South Terrace School at 4 p.m. The volleyball team is also planning a Bean Bag Tournament at 4 p.m.

The spotlight will once again turn to the Carlton VFW as they host their popular steak fry from 4-8 p.m., followed by live music from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Third Base will also provide live music from 9 p.m. to close.

The Minnesota Voyageur Ultra 50-Mile Foot Race award ceremony is set for 8 p.m. at Carlton High School.

St. Francis Catholic Church will celebrate Mass at 8 a.m. Sunday, Bethesda Lutheran Church will hold a Polka Service at 9 a.m. and J.M. Paine Presbyterian Church will have worship at 11 a.m.

The National Guard will once again set up its climbing wall beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday at Four Seasons, and bingo play will resume at the VFW from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last chance for the Homemade/Homegrown Market at Four Seasons will be noon to 4 p.m.

Lineup begins at noon for the Carlton Daze Parade, organized by Wells Fargo Bank of Carlton, next to Carlton High School. Following the parade there will be kids’ activities at the Carlton Fire Hall, with refreshments served, and the Pedal to the Metal Tractor Pull at Four Seasons, sponsored by Carlton Community Education.

The festival wraps up with live music at Third Base from 2 p.m. to midnight.


All of the Carlton Daze weekend, food vendors will be available at the Third Base, Four Seasons parking lot, the Carlton VFW and The Streetcar. Carlton historical T-shirts will be sold at Wells Fargo, and there will be bike rentals and ice cream at Carlton Bike Rental/Art Dimensions.
