Carlton School District Business Manager Norman Nelis announced welcome news at a board meeting Tuesday, March 15: The district's first 2020-21 budget revision cuts the deficit by more than 50%.
When the budget was adopted in June, the district had a projected deficit of more than $450,000. But thanks to reduced expenditures due to the mostly virtual school format, Nelis said the deficit has been reduced to about $208,000.
"We have less payroll and less supplies being used inside the buildings," Nelis said. "And we received CRF (Coronavirus Relief Fund) dollars that helped reduce spending in custodial and other expenses."
Nelis said the board members could expect another budget revision prior to the end of the year.
Board members did not comment on the presentation, but approved the budget unanimously.
