Carlton readies for annual celebration

Carlton will once again be "the place to be" next weekend as it hosts its annual Carlton Daze celebration.

Slated to run from Friday, July 25, to Sunday, July 27, the popular summer celebration features non-stop entertainment from dawn until well after dusk.

The fun kicks off on Friday with the community garage sales from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Maps will be available at local businesses.

The Carlton Public Library will also hold its annual book sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carlton Fire Hall.

Registration for the 5K run will take place between 3-5:45 p.m. on Friday at the Four Seasons Sports Complex, with the event slated to leave the starting line at 6 p.m.

There will be a spaghetti feed at Four Seasons sponsored by the National Honor Society from 4-8 p.m., and the VFW will host bingo from 4-9 p.m.

Entrants in the ultra marathon will be able to pick up their race packets at the Cozy Cafe between the hours of 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Dance to the country/rock music of the CAL Stage Band from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Third Base, or head over to the VFW to enjoy the music of Don't Panic from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Gear up for Saturday's activities at the pancake breakfast from 5:30-11 a.m. at the VFW, sponsored by the Carlton Area Stars of the Future Grant Program.

Registration for the ultra marathon opens at 6 a.m., with the race to follow at 7 a.m. The Classic Car Show will take center stage from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with awards slated for 1 p.m. in front of the VFW.

The Electric Tractor Show is set for the Four Seasons Complex from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., sponsored by The Tax Service.

Enjoy concessions at Four Seasons from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with a craft fair sponsored by the Carlton High School Home Economics Department.

Tee-off time for the Carlton Daze Golf Tournament is set for 9 a.m. at Pine Hill Golf, and Northwoods Credit Union will host a Carlton Daze Crazy Race beginning at the credit union at 10 a.m.

An archery demonstration will be held in the upstairs facility of the Four Seasons Complex, and the VFW will host bingo from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The R.E.A.C.H. program will serve root beer floats beginning at noon along Chestnut Avenue, and artist Jayne Conley will create personalized caricatures all day.

Don't miss the ribbon cutting for the new water tower at noon, with the old tower slated to come down shortly after Carlton Daze is over - so bring your cameras for one last shot!

The Carlton Area Lions Club will hold its popular auction beginning at 1 p.m. at the Four Seasons Complex, and the kids will love the duck races at Otter Creek at 2 p.m., sponsored by the Carlton High School volleyball team.

The Lake Superior Zoo will once again present its Zoo Mobile exhibit at Four Seasons from 3-4:30 p.m., sponsored by the Carlton Daze Golfers.

For pure family fun, why not take part in the beanbag tournament hosted by the Carlton High School volleyball team starting at 4 p.m.

The Carlton County Sheriff's Department will present a K9 demonstration at the Carlton Fire Hall at 5 p.m.

A steak fry will be served at the VFW from 5:30-8 p.m., and the B&B Wagon will be on hand at South Terrace Elementary from 7-10 p.m. At 8:45 p.m., enjoy "Sandlot," a free outdoor movie at the South Terrace Football Field, sponsored by Community Memorial Hospital, Northwoods Credit Union, Tom Proulx, Carlton VFW and the Carlton Area Chamber of Commerce. (In case of bad weather, the movie will be shown in the Four Seasons Complex.)

The CAL Stage Band will once again perform at Third Base from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., and Don't Panic will play at the VFW from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Sunday starts out early with a French toast breakfast at the Four Seasons Complex from 7-11 a.m., sponsored by the Four Seasons board.

A polka service will be held at Bethesda Church at 9 a.m.

The Four Seasons board will host a kiddie carnival at the complex from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and concessions will be available during that time as well.

The VFW will host bingo play from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the R.E.A.C.H. program volunteers will serve root beer floats on Chestnut Avenue beginning at 11 a.m.

The spotlight will be on the big Carlton Daze parade at 1 p.m., organized by Wells Fargo. Following the parade will be the kids tractor pull sponsored by Scott Nordman and North Shore Bank.

Stop by the Carlton Fire Hall's open house from 2:15-3 p.m. and enjoy the Kris Vox one-man band at the Third Base from 4-8 p.m.

Events slated for all weekend will be sidewalk sales at Brown Gift & Gallery, B&B Wagon concessions at the Third Base, softball and volleyball tournaments organized by Third Base, carnival games on Chestnut Avenue and "Dunk the Firefighter" at the Carlton Fire Hall.
