All too often, county government around the state only makes headlines when taxes are going up, services are going down, or commissioners are caught in the middle of some big, hairy dispute.
Well, it's time for our own county to collectively throw out its chest and soak in the reflected glory of the commendable work being done by a host of good folks throughout the county working on behalf of our residents.
Carlton County Public Health and Human Services, the Fond du Lac Reservation and various and wide-ranging collaborative groups have made amazing strides in effectively keeping children and families safe, out of trouble - and together.
And for its exemplary work, the county has attracted the attention of the state and nation in a major way. Not only are Carlton County's efforts in such areas as truancy, child protection and emergency preparedness being recognized and applauded, but they are also being used as models for others to follow suit.
The big winners, of course, are those whose lives benefit from the respect, compassion and insightful expertise of our social services and related agencies.

There are tough financial times ahead for all of us, and the county stands to take a bigger financial hit than many. Let's stand strong and work together to keep that momentum going.
