Carlton County Historical Society announces the 'Big Read' kickoff

Carlton County will come together to read and celebrate the historic novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird, from Oct. 15 through Nov. 30.

The Carlton County Historical Society will launch its "Big Read" initiative in celebration of "To Kill a Mockingbird" with a kickoff event at the Carlton County Courthouse on Oct. 15 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The event will feature Judge Dale Wolf as master of ceremonies, readings from the County Seat Theater Players, and an hors d'oeuvres table. The program will take place in the third floor of the courthouse.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents the Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest.

The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

Carlton County is one of nearly 200 communities nationwide participating in the Big Read in 2007. The local community will celebrate "To Kill a Mockingbird" with a full calendar of events, including a keynote address from Carlton native and current head of the American Library Association, Loriene Roy.

The Big Read in Carlton County is presented in partnership with the Cloquet Public Library and the Cloquet Education Foundation, but more support is needed.   • Kickoff Party - Oct. 15 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Carlton County Courthouse;
  • "Boo Radley" Art Show and Costume Contest - Oct. 30 from 5-7 p.m. at the Carlton County Historical Society;
  • Tolerance and Justice Panel - Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Moose Lake Public Library;
  • Keynote Address - Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Fond du Lac Community College, featuring Loriene Roy, head of the American Library Association and director of "If you can read, you can do anything."
  • Movie Screening - Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Cloquet Public High School.
