For the second time in just a week the Carlton Legion downed Moose Lake-Willow River in boys Legion baseball by a 12-4 score.

"Our defense played well," explained coach Mike Saunders. "We turned two double plays and that helped back up the pitching of Joey Broneak."

Broneak went seven innings in picking up the win for Carlton in his first start of the summer.

After a scoreless first inning, Carlton started off the second with three hits to get the offense going. Broneak led off the inning with a single, Andrew Buller doubled and that was followed by a Adam Schmitz RBI single to score Broneak. With runners on first and third, Josh Johnson walked to load the bases.

With nobody out, Nate Fremling singled in Schmitz. After a ground out Caleb Hatfield walked to load the bases again and then with one out, Bryce Karppinen singled in two runs followed by Mike Saunders and Ben Rapp walks.

"Joey and our defense kept Moose Lake-Willow River from having the big inning against us," mentioned Saunders. "It has been a year of big innings for us. They either carry or kill us."

Moose Lake was led on offense by Hayden Christianson with two hits, Mike Unzen with one hit and two walks, and the pitching of Joey Bohaty, who pitched the last three innings and allowed only two runs.

The Carlton Legion is made up of players from Carlton, AlBrook and Cromwell.
