It had been over a year since the Cromwell-Wright baseball program had earned a victory, so head coach Ryan Schmidt wanted to make sure his boys were keeping their heads up and working hard.
Finally in early May, that hard work paid off in a victory.
The Cardinals used their bats to out-slug McGregor 11-9 late in the season. The historic win marked the first for the program since their 6-5 upset over East Central in April of 2008. Throughout the rest of the season, Cromwell-Wright continued to give it their all, but could only muster the lone victory over the Mercuries, as they finished the season with a 1-16 overall record.
Though Cromwell-Wright only posted one win this year - and just two over the past pair of seasons - Schmidt has brought the program back to life in the small community. The Cardinals hung tough with a number of teams this year including East Central, Barnum, Cotton and even Two Harbors.
The Cards lose eight seniors from this year's team, but with a good number of kids lacing up their cleats and putting on their uniforms next spring, the Cromwell-Wright baseball program is only going to continue posting more victories in their future.
