The Barnum Bombers and McGregor Mercuries split a pair of baseball games on Monday night in Barnum. The Mercs took game one 2-0 while the Bombers grabbed game two 15-5.

"Tyler Wekseth pitched the first game," explained Bomber coach Dave Duesler. "He pitched well enough to win, but we had one error the entire game and it cost us the two runs."

The Bombers had trouble getting the bat on the ball against Mercs pitcher Mike Taust, who gave up just three hits while fanning 11 Barnum hitters. Taust also added a pair of hits in the game.

"Our problem was we couldn't get the bat on the ball and we struck out 11 times," mentioned Duesler. "We just didn't put any pressure on them to make a play. It was really disappointing, especially after our previous game that we lost to Carlton 3-1 in similar fashion."

Andrew Rock was the lone Bomber with two hits in the first game of the double header.

The second game was much different with Erik Johnson starting the game on the mound for Barnum, but only making it a third of an inning before being relieved by Willie Carlson.

"Willie came in and gave up just two hits the rest of the way," commented Duesler. "Our offense finally broke out its shell with five guys getting two hits."

Those players who managed a pair of hits for Barnum were Carlson, Rock, Dylan Eggen, Wekseth and Taylor Carlson.

"Carlson, a freshman, really was the catalyst for us," explained Duesler. "He came off the bench to get a hit and RBI for us in the third inning and we ended up scoring eight runs that inning. He later added another key single and RBI that led to a three-run fourth inning that put the game out of reach."

Barnum is now 3-3 on the season.
