Bernice Evelyn Zimmerman, 83, of Carlton, Minn., passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, in Inter-Faith Care Center, Carlton. She was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Atkinson, Minn., to Herbert and Gladys (Hayes) Baldwin. She attended school in Atkinson and Barnum until March of 1942, when she traveled by bus to Louisiana to marry Robert Zimmerman, who was stationed at Camp Clayborne. Shortly after that, they resided at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, until the fall of 1943 when Robert was shipped overseas to Europe. She then resided with her parents in Atkinson until the end of the war. Bernice raised three children in Carlton while working at Diamond Match during the war years and later at the Carlton Nursing Home and also as a home health aide. She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Carlton, and was past president of the Carlton VFW Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Dorothy Baldwin.
Bernice is survived by Robert, her husband of 65 years; daughter Janet Laufenburger of Ohio; son Jerry (Bonnie) of Isanti, Minn.; son Brent (Shannon) of Cloquet; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Rev. Burnell (Berniece); sisters Vivian Bouchie and Phyllis Sumner; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Bernice's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Inter-Faith Care Center for their warm and compassionate care of Bernice.
Family will receive friends Friday, Dec. 14, from noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 204 Fifth Street North, Carlton. Private family interment will be in Atkinson Cemetery.
