It was a typical night of solid defense as the Barnum girls maintained a perfect record this season by knocking off Moose Lake-Willow River 57-29 in girls basketball.

The Bombers employ a suffocating defense and an aggressive offense and it proved to be too much for the Rebels who gave up the 13th win of the season to Barnum.

"We played a good game defensively against Moose Lake," mentioned Bomber coach Randy Myhre. "We took care of the ball on offense, but did not execute as well as we could have. It was a nice win against a big rival."

Colleen McKay, who averages over 20 points a game for Barnum, tossed in 22 points in leading all scorers in the game. The post player proved to be too much for the Rebels to handle and when they did slow her down it was a case of too much depth for them to overcome.

Megan Myhre cashed in with 11 points for Barnum, it was nine points for Brianne Benson, eight for Jessica Benson, Katrina Newman added four and Jamie Wickstrom finished with three points.

Caitlin Jusczak led the Rebels with 18 points, Karley Rentz finished with six points, Hillary Peterson added three and Allie Adamczak scored a pair of points.

Key to the Bombers win was their ability to score both from the inside and outside. While McKay was handling the inside chores it was Benson and Benson, Wickstrom and Myhre who combined for 21 points from the three-point arch.

  • On Monday night the Bombers moved to 14-0 on the season with a 65-42 thumping of East Central as McKay again led the way with a 34 point effort.

The Bombers held a 33-24 halftime lead and then tightened the noose defensively on East Central in the second half by allowing just 18 second half points.
"We simply did not do a very good job defensively at times," commented Myhre. "We were not putting enough pressure on the ball and we struggled to finish several plays. It was a good win for us on the road, but we are capable of playing much better."

Katrina Newman added 16 points for Barnum to also finish in double-figure scoring, Jessica Benson added five, Brianne Benson and Hannah Wekseth each scored three, it was two for Megan Myhre and Leah Nordvall.

Katelyn Thomsen led East Central with 18 points and was the only player in double digits.

The Bombers are now 6-0 in the Polar League.
