Barnum High School will be starting the new year with a shortened six period schedule for both in-person and hybrid plans.
Principal Greg Campbell posted a video on the school website and Barnum School Open Forum Facebook page to explain why the schedule is shortened from eight periods to six.
School administrators had two goals, Campbell said: to give teachers time to prepare for distance teaching and to keep the afternoon buses as close to a normal schedule as possible.
“It isn't perfect,” Campbell said in the video.
Students would be done with class by 1:45 p.m. under the new schedule. Students who ride the bus would leave at that time. Students who do not ride the bus would have a supervised study hall and be released at the normal time.

Campbell said about 60 students out of 360 at the high school will participate in distance learning.
The schedule is posted on both the school website and Facebook page.
The elementary school went a different route.
Principal Judi Vitito said there were already enough staff members in place to have three teachers working with distance learning students. There are 11 distance learning students in kindergarten and first grade, 18 in second and third grades, and 24 students in fourth and fifth grades, Vitito said. A total of 286 elementary students will attend in person classes.
