The 18th annual Area III Envirothon will be held at Cloquet Forestry Center on May 7. Area III is an association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) of eight counties including Carlton, Pine, St. Louis, Kanabec, Aitkin, Mille Lacs, Cook and Lake.
This is a day-long event for 11th-grade students and their teachers. Forty-nine teams consisting of 245 students will learn about soil, water, air and conservation of these precious resources while encouraging development. The event is sponsored by area businesses.
The winning team will take part in the state-wide competition in Savage, Minn., on May 21 and have an opportunity to go on to the national Canon Envirothon in Pennsylvania. In the 1990s one of our Willow River teams made it to the national level.
