One woman is dead after an ATV crash in Barnum Township on Saturday morning.

According to the Carlton County Sheriff's Office, a woman in her 40s "received multiple injuries" after losing control of her ATV and rolling it at about 11:40 a.m. at the intersection of County Roads 139 and 6. She was transported by medical helicopter to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, where she later died.

The woman, driving the ATV south on County Road 139, likely didn't see the interaction because of the dust created buy the other ATVs in her group, the sheriff's office said.

"Due to the dry conditions the group of ATVs had created a large amount of dust on the gravel road. It is believed that due to limited visibility from the dust, the victim did not see the approaching intersection," the sheriff's office said in a news release. "When the female victim attempted to stop her ATV, she lost control and the ATV rolled over on top of her."

The victim was wearing a helmet and alcohol is not believed to be a factor, the sheriff's office said.

The victim's name has not been released and the sheriff's office is investigating the crash.
