A bear cub running out onto the road caused a head-on collision Saturday afternoon near Floodwood.
Authorities responded to a report of a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 2 near Rogers Road in Floodwood Township around 1:09 p.m. A 2018 Ford F-150 was traveling west on U.S. Highway 2 when a bear cub ran into the road, a news release said. The driver of the Ford truck, Joseph Wayne Seppala, 30, of Esko, swerved to avoid the bear, crossed the centerline and hit a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado head-on.
The three occupants of the Chevrolet truck — Brett Mckinney, 45, Jody Mckinney, 46, and Taylor Mckinney, 9, all of Rhinelander, Wis. — suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Essentia Health-St. Mary's in Duluth. Seppala was uninjured.
Responding agencies included the Minnesota State Patrol, Cloquet Fire Department, Floodwood Fire Department, St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, Floodwood Police Department and St. Louis County Rescue Squad.
