Long-time County Commissioner Gordon Aanerud of Carlton was elected board chairperson for 2007 at the annual session of the Carlton County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday. Aanerud, who represents District 4, has served as a county commissioner for 15 years and currently sits on the Arrowhead Regional Corrections Committee, the Association of Minnesota Counties Transportation Committee, the Carlton County Extension Committee, Carlton County Law Enforcement Committee, Carlton County Law Library Committee, Carlton County Septic Financing Committee, Carlton Fire District, Carlton County Land Use Task Force, Human Services Appeal Committee, Local Emergency Food and Shelter Board, the Northeast Minnesota Office of Job Training, Onanegozie Resource Conservation and Development Committee, the Planning Commission and the WLSSD Planning Committee/Commission.

Commissioner Ted Pihlman of Moose Lake was elected board vice-chairperson for 2007. In addition to his regular duties, Pihlman also represents the county board on the Area Transportation Partnership, the Carlton County Budget Committee, the Carlton County Collaborative Committee, the Big Sandy Watershed District, the Carlton County Economic Development Advisory Committee, the Carlton County Septic Finance Committee, the Emergency Medical Services Council and the Lakes and Pines Community Action Council. Pihlman will also serve as Committee-of-the-Whole chairperson for 2007.

Commissioner Mel Tan of Cloquet was elected vice-chairperson of the Committee-of-the-Whole. Tan also serves on the Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency, AMC Transportation Committee, Carlton County Economic Development Advisory Committee, Carlton County Land Use Task Force, Job Evaluation Committee, the Recycling and Solid Waste Advisory Committee, the Recycling and Solid Waste Advisory Committee and the Regional Solid Waste Committee.

In other business to be conducted at the annual session, bids for legal publications in 2007 were awarded to the Star-Gazette and Arrowhead-Leader, both of Moose Lake.

The times and dates for county board meetings during 2007 will be as follows: regular meeting, 8:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month; adjourned meeting, 4 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month; Carlton County Board of Equalization and Board of Review and Equalization for the unorganized townships of Carlton County, 10 a.m. on June 12 and 3:30 p.m. on June 25, in the Carlton County board room. The Committee-of-the-Whole will meet at the Carlton County Transportation Building meeting room on the first Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m., with commissioners and department heads meeting to discuss road and bridge matters, land and buildings, general government, public safety and other matters.

In further business, Commissioner Dick Brenner advised the board that representatives of the union locals would like to meet with the board to discuss the matter of prevailing wages and hiring union workers for county projects. The board agreed to invite labor union representatives to the February meeting of the Committee-of-the-Whole.
