A person is in custody following an assault that seriously injured a woman Thursday afternoon in Thomson Township, according to a news release from the Carlton County Sheriff's Office.

While responding to a welfare check on Stark Road, members of the Carlton County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota State Patrol located a seriously injured a woman at the scene when they arrived at 12:57 p.m.

According to the release, the woman was determined to be the victim of an assault and was tended to and transported by Life Link III Air Ambulance. Esko Fire and Cloquet Area Fire District also responded to the scene.

During the course of the investigation, a suspect was identified and located in the Twin Cities metro area. The suspect was taken into custody and will be transported to the Carlton County Jail. The victim and the suspect were known to each other and the sheriff's office is not looking for any other suspects, the release said.

The sheriff's office will continue to investigate the matter with the assistance of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
