Carlton County commissioners voted Tuesday, May 28, to authorize an election for funding of the proposed jail project. The vote will go to the public during the General Election on Nov. 5.
The funding options are either a property tax or a special sales tax.
Commissioners also voted Tuesday to authorize drafting a request for proposal to seek an architecture and engineering design services firm to draw design options for a jail.
The process of finding and hiring a design firm takes several months. The board is considering three design options. A fourth option may open if the Carlton High School campus becomes available.
The commissioners said they plan to narrow the design plans to one by the time the firm is ready to draw up a design.
Commissioner Tom Proulx cast the only "nay" note. He stressed the vote is only for the type of funding voters prefer, not if they are for or against the jail project.
