A 31-year-old man is dead after a hit-and-run crash in West Duluth on Tuesday evening.
At about 6:47 p.m., Peter James Seppanen, 30, of Esko, was driving a motorcycle up 40th Avenue West just below Horseshoe Bend, when he was struck by a vehicle that authorities believe to have crossed over the centerline, Lt. Robert Shene of the Duluth Police Department said in a statement Tuesday. Seppanen was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses at the scene reported that a red Jeep hit the motorcyclist and then continued down 40th Avenue West, according to police spokeswoman Ingrid Hornibrook.
The Jeep was later found near Wadena Street and 52nd Avenue West, where two males were detained. One was arrested and booked into the St. Louis County Jail on drug possession and DWI-related charges, Hornibrook said. The other was released after police determined he wasn’t involved.
Police have not yet positively identified the Jeep’s driver at the time of the crash, Hornibrook said.
Police are requesting that anyone who witnessed the incident contact the department’s Crash Investigations Unit at (218) 730-5666.
