Wrenshall ice rink gets warming hut
Skaters who utilize the Wrenshall ice rink behind the post office will soon have a warm place to lace up their skates or take a break from the cold.
A Wrenshall High School construction class completed building a warming hut this week, per the city's request. Plans were for it to be open today after the city transports the structure from the school to the ice rink.
It's not unusual for Chris Gustafson's industrial arts classes to partner with the community on projects, whether it's a garage for a county recycling center or awnings for the city building.
"It's a nice relationship. When they (the city) need a project, sometimes they'll call us to help out," Gustafson said. "We get a nice project, the city gets a quality project and the students get a little bit of experience doing something."
For many winters, Wrenshall's ice rink location sat without a smooth sheet of ice to skate across, until the city decided to start maintaining a rink again last winter.
"The council thought it would be a nice thing to have something for the kids," Alieca Johnson, city clerk and treasurer, said of the decision to install an ice rink, like old times, for anyone in the community to use.
