One person was seriously injured and a house was heavily damaged during a fire Wednesday morning in Cloquet.

The Cloquet Area Fire District was dispatched at 6:41 a.m. to a report of a structure fire at 120 15th St. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy fire visible from the two-story house's main-floor windows on two sides.

An occupant of the home who was found outside sustained serious injuries while exiting the fire and was transported to a hospital.

Three animals were found dead during a search of the house. No firefighters were injured.

Mutual aid was requested from the Carlton Fire Department and Ambulance to assist with fire suppression and transport of the injured occupant. The main fire was knocked down quickly with an aggressive interior attack by initial arriving crews.

The kitchen was gutted by fire, which extended into the walls and up to the second floor. The house sustained extensive fire damage to the main floor, with heat and smoke damage throughout the second level. Total damage is estimated at $170,000.

Approximately 25 firefighters were on the scene for three hours.

The CAFD Fire Investigation Team is working with the State Fire Marshal's office to determine the cause of the fire.
