Twelve people filed to run in the special election for District 1 committeeperson (Cloquet) on the Fond du Lac Reservation Business Committee, including the person who was removed from the seat in late July.

Candidates for the Oct. 2 primary election were certified by the RBC and will appear on the ballot in the following order: Wally Dupuis, Vanessa L. Northrup, Charles Smith, Jarvis “Chubbs” Paro, Patty Petite, Debra Topping, Jeffrey Reynolds, Kenneth Larry Defoe, Jr., Charlin F. Diver, Todd Tidaback, Jeffrey Tibbetts and Jim Loons.

Two candidates will advance to a general election in December, unless one candidate gets more than 50 percent of the votes in the primary.

The Cloquet RBC seat has been open since Vanessa Northrup was removed from the tribal council following a hearing and a vote by her fellow RBC members July 30. The hearing came after 20 percent of resident eligible voters signed a petition asserting that Northrup had committed “malfeasance in the handling of tribal affairs” and requesting she be removed from office.

Northrup was accused of signing and depositing a check for $2,000 for the reservation into her personal bank account. She doesn’t dispute that it happened, but said it was a mistake.

Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Cloquet Community Center, 1720 Big Lake Road, Cloquet.

Candidate statements for 10 of the 12 candidates were published in the September issue of the tribal newspaper, available at
