Snowboarder dies after crash at Spirit Mountain

A 20-year-old snowboarder who died Sunday, April 8, as a result of injuries suffered in an accident at Spirit Mountain has been identified.

Derek Harms, a student at Winona State University originally from Barrington, Ill., died after an accident on the ski area's Big Air Terrain Park.

The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office on Tuesday said Harms "died as a result of multiple blunt-force injuries due to a snowboarding accident."

According to Spirit Mountain officials, Harms was apparently snowboarding with a group of friends who noticed he had not finished a run with them. When they went back to check they found him unresponsive. Ski Patrol first responders immediately began assistance and Harms was taken by Gold Cross Ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, where he was later pronounced dead.

Harms appears to be the seventh death at the popular Duluth facility since it opened in the mid-1970s.
