Mayme "Mae" Maria Simula, 90, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, in the Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn. She was born Dec. 1, 1918, in Cloquet to Sulo and Selma Kantonen. Mae grew up in rural Cloquet and attended school in Brookston, Minn.. She worked at Diamond Match Company and Northwest Paper Company during the war. For 15 years Mae worked as a cook in the Cloquet schools and later retired from Weyerhaeuser Company in 1980.
Mae was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Ladies Get-together Club, the Stoney Brook Birthday Club, and a 10-year volunteer for Meals on Wheels. After retiring she enjoyed traveling in the United States and Finland. Mae was devoted to her family and friends. Her loving spirit will long be remembered and appreciated.
Mayme was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; one brother, Lauri Kantonen; and one sister, Vieno "Vi" Johnson.
She is survived by four sons, Wayne of New Hope, Steve (Kathy) of Plymouth, Herb of Cloquet, and Howard of Proctor; one brother, Ahti (Aino) Kantonen of Cloquet; five grandchildren; six great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews, cousins and their families in Finland.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service in Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow in the Fireside Room of the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.
