Genealogy, Music and Film
The library will team up with the Genealogical Society of Carlton County for an introductory workshop taught by professional genealogist Vickie Chapurdia on Sept. 25. Chapurdia will also teach a six-week class on writing your life story beginning Sept. 23. Finnish-American sound artist and violinist Sara Pajunen will perform on Saturday, Sept. 20. And the library’s monthly film series resumes on Sept. 9, with John Huston’s last film, “The Dead,” based on a story from James Joyce’s “Dubliners.” The story will be discussed the following week by the library’s reading club.
Minnesota Book Award Winner brings Scandinavian-American variety show to Cloquet
The library was awarded a grant through the Minnesota Book Awards for a major author event. The library is coordinating with Sons of Norway-Heimsyn Lodge to sponsor a program with Minnesota Book Award winner Barton Sutter at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6. Sutter will team up with his brother, musician Ross Sutter, to present “Greet the Folks at Home,” an hour-plus of Minnesota-Scandinavian flavored humor, reminiscences, and folk music.
Sutter is the only writer to have won the Minnesota Book Award in three categories: poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Ross Sutter plays guitar, button accordion, dulcimer and Irish drum and has appeared on “A Prairie Home Companion.” Their show explores the experience of Scandinavian heritage with songs and stories, poetry and music, while ranging in subject from comedy to tragedy.
The program has been made possible through financing from the Minnesota Department of Education, administered by The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, who sponsor the Minnesota Book Awards, and with additional funding from the Sons of Norway Foundation.
