‘Old Jake’s Skirts’ places third at AACTFest

County Seat Theater Company’s production of “Old Jake’s Skirts” has placed third at the AACTFest 2015 Region V festival held at Newton Community Theatre in Newton, Iowa, this past weekend.

To be eligible to perform at the AACTFest 2015 Region V festival, County Seat Theater Company performed at the Minnesota Association of Community Theatres MACTFest 2015 state festival in March and won Best of Festival.

In addition to placing in the top three at the Region V festival, the production was honored with Festival Adjudicator Awards for “Outstanding Achievement in Scenic Design” (Cheryl Kramer-Milder), “Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design” (Mike Jurek), and “Outstanding Achievement in Acting” (Joel Soukkala).

This was the County Seat Theater Company’s second appearance at the Regional level.

“I felt the excellence of theater was much higher than the last time we competed in the Region festival,” said Joel Soukkala, County Seat Theater general manager. “Nobody had any idea what the final outcome would be. All seven shows were completely different in style and very well done. I think it really just came down to personal preferences of the adjudicators. The troupe from Dassel-Cokato, Minn. was well deserving of Best of Festival and we wish them the best of luck at the National Festival.”

“The warmth of your show is only exceeded by the warmth and grace of your company,” said Dave Metcalf, director of the Dassel-Cokato Fungus-Amongus Players, who admired the County Seat Theater’s production.

This is the third consecutive time where a Minnesota theater will represent Region V at the AACT National Festival in Grand Rapids, Mich., in June. The County Seat Theater Company represented Region V at the National Festival in 2012 with their production of “Wiley and the Hairy Man.” AACTFest is a program of the American Association of Community Theatre. It is a biennial event that has been held since 1969.

County Seat Theater Company, located in the Encore Performing Arts Center at 2035 Highway 33 South in Cloquet, offers a full season of local performances, as well as youth productions, musical acts and has an art gallery featuring work by local artists.
