The Sutter Brothers will perform their new show “North Country Characters” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Cloquet Public Library.

This 50-minute show runs the gamut from humor to heartache. The music ranges from songs of immigrant longing to the hilarious hit “When the Smelt Buckets Are Loaded, I’m Coming Home to You.” Quirky characters (and critters) of Northern Minnesota are the day’s theme, presented through songs, stories, poetry and music.

The Sutter Brothers have been presenting foot-stomping programs for 30 years that emphasize their rural, small-town roots and Scandinavian heritage. In 2014, the duo won a highly competitive Arts Tour Minnesota Grant, allowing them to take “North Country Characters” statewide. They recently performed in Sweden and have been featured in the film series “Pretty Much 100% Scandinavian.”

Best known for his baritone voice, Ross Sutter plays and impressive array of instruments: guitar, button accordion, dulcimer and Irish drum. He has issued four CDs, won three fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board, and performed for A Prairie Home Companion. The author of eight books, Bart Sutter is a three-time winner of the Minnesota Book Award and was named the first Poet Laureate of Duluth. He has written for Minnesota Public Radio and has had three plays produced.

This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
