    723-0075: A $5 "recession lunch" is available on Wednesdays. In the winter it was a casserole dish, and in warmer months it's a salad lunch with fruit and bread.

    "We wanted to give people a break," co-owner Marcie Stoyke said. "It's hard times out there; we want to feed them some good comfort food."

  • Bulldog Pizza & Grill, 101 Mount Royal Shopping Circle, (218) 728-3663: A dine-in only "stimulus menu" of smaller-portioned menu items, with nothing more than $6 includes personal pizzas, ravioli, $2 burgers, spaghetti and meatballs, and fish and chips.

    "Employees don't get a

    discount on it but it's a hit, even with us," manager Erik Horvik said.

  • Lake Avenue Cafe, 394 S. Lake Ave., (218) 722-2355: "recession wine-relief program" includes all wine, bottles or glasses, half-price Wednesdays.
  • Chester Creek Cafe, 1902 E. Eighth St., (218) 724-6811: $5 peasant bowl of beans and rice with a Spanish-style sauce, with the option of adding $2 as a food shelf donation.
  • Nokomis Restaurant and Bar, 5593 North Shore Drive, (218) 525-2186: Several lunch and dinner menu prices have been dropped 10 percent to 15 percent while retaining portion sizes, such as a $10 coq au vin.

    "People seem to be staying away from four-course meals," said Curtis LaBreche, sous chef.

  • Restaurant 301, 301 E. Superior St., (218) 733-5660: A three-course prix fixe, or tasting menu, for $15 on Sunday nights, with select glasses of wine for $3.
  • Valentini's Vicino Lago, 1400 London Road, (218) 728-5900: A Wednesday spaghetti and meatball dinner for $7.99, with kids younger than 10 eating free; and a family-style pasta take-and-go service.
  • Tejas Texas Grill & Saloon, 4702 Miller Trunk Highway, Hermantown, (218) 740-3990: Buy one, get one free sandwiches and burgers on Tuesdays, and a deal beginning soon for two Mexican entrees, fried ice cream and chips and salsa for $20.
  • Lakeview Castle, 5135 North Shore Drive, (218) 525-1014: Lunch specials ranging from $3 to $8, and Sunday through Thursday night all-you-can-eat dinner specials for less than $10.

    "Seventy-five percent of our customers are ordering the drink and lunch specials," manager Ken Koeglar said.
