SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES
October 14, 2019

The Wrenshall Board of Education, Independent School District No. 100, Wrenshall, Minnesota held its regular board meeting on Monday, October 14, 2019 at the Wrenshall School Library Media Center. Board Chair Laveau called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.

Members present: Matthew Laveau, Janaki Fisher-Merritt, Warren Weiderman, Debra Washenesky, and Jack Eudy. Member absent: Michelle Blanchard.

MOTION by Eudy seconded by Washenesky to adopt the adjusted agenda. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Weiderman seconded by Washenesky to approve the consent agenda including checks #50349-#50468. Motion carried unanimously.
Superintendent Belcastro recognized:
•Staff and student support to our teacher on medical leave, specifically Ross Tollgaard, John Peterson, Suzy Berger, Josi Hlava, and Kaila Hlava.
•Heartfelt condolences to Esko Schools for their loss of 10th grader Jackson Pfister.
•Kent Hammit for his summer weight room supervision and his encouragement and support to all Raptors football players.

Report of Superintendent:
•Lyric Opera of the North coming on Monday, October 21 at 1:05 p.m. in the Commons.
•School Perceptions Survey to determine support for referendum and consolidation.
•Rural Career and Technical Education Consortium Grant - FY 20 through The Century Program Northeast which will function through the Northeast Area School Consortium.
•Wellness Policy.

Employee Spotlight - Christy Wilken, School Psychologist and Data Analyst for QComp Program.

Report of Community Education Director - Julie Jacobson:
•School facility is full on weekends with sports.
•Latchkey Coordinator, Bailey McFarland, is an excellent addition to the staff.
•Mother/Son Gala is October 26 at Buffalo House. The Father-Daughter Ball will use the same theme materials to be more cost efficient.

Report of Director of Buildings and Grounds - Mike Smith:
•Roof Leaks will be repaired.
•Asbestos Report completed.
•Snow Plowing will continue to be done by Jeremy Construction.
•Snow equipment is ready for the winter.
•Boiler up and running with new control box installed by UHL.

Informational items:
•Brenna Belden, through Minnesota Reading Corps funding, will be working 35 hours per week as Elementary Reading Corps tutor for the 2019-2020 school year.
•Post for additional Special Education Paraprofessional for school year 2019-2020.
•Northeast Minnesota Apprenticeship Summit, November 15, 2019, Holiday Inn, Duluth.
•Absenteeism in Carlton County fact sheet.

MOTION by Fisher-Merritt seconded by Washenesky to approve Architectural Resources Inc. Professional Services Proposal Phase I - School Consolidation Planning for Carlton-Wrenshall school districts. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Eudy seconded by Washenesky to approve posting Special Education Paraprofessional 1.0 FTE effective 2019-2020 school year per ESP unit contract. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Laveau seconded by Fisher-Merritt to approve Aaron Lattu leave of absence beginning September 5, 2019. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Fisher-Merritt seconded by Washenesky to approve hire of Veeda Tornes 1.0 FTE BA 1 Long Term Substitute Social Studies/Special Education position due to teacher leave of absence effective October 3, 2019 per ED MN Wrenshall Contract. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Eudy seconded by Weiderman to approve Jeremy Zywicki (per coach leave of absence) recommendation to hire Jason Anderson, Carlton High School student teacher, Junior High Football Coach effective for balance of 2019-2020 school year. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Fisher-Merritt seconded by Washenesky to accept Naomi Connolly Assistant Cook 6-hour per day on student contact days position resignation effective October 31, 2019. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Weiderman seconded by Washenesky to approve posting of Assistant Cook 6-hours per day on student contact days position per AFSCME unit contract. Motion carried unanimously.

•Teacher negotiations on October 26.
•Board member questioned water and heat need for Rec Building.
•Board member suggested creation of education tool explaining how levy's work.
•Board member suggested fellow board members use of MSBA self-evaluation tool.
•Public Meeting regarding consolidation on Monday October 21, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at Wrenshall School with ARI and Ehlers present at the meeting.
•Public Meeting regarding consolidation on Thursday October 24, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at South Terrace in Carlton with ARI and Ehlers present at the meeting.
•Public Meeting regarding consolidation on Monday October 28, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at Sawyer Community Center in Sawyer with ARI and Ehlers present at the meeting.
•Public Meeting regarding consolidation on Tuesday October 29, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at Wrenshall School with ARI and Ehlers present at the meeting.

MOTION by Fisher-Merritt seconded by Eudy to adjourn at 7:45 p.m. Motion carried unanimously.
