CARLTON SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES
The Board of Education of Independent School District 93, Carlton, Minnesota, met in regular session on Monday, March 16, 2020 in the Carlton School Board Conference Room. Lehto called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. The meeting continued with the Pledge of Allegiance. Members present: Chmielewski, Gustafson, Hagenah, Karp, Ojibway, Lehto, with Superintendent Carman.
MOTION by Hagenah to approve amended agenda was supported by Gustafson. MOTION passed 6-0.
No public comments were taken.
•Congratulations to Taylor Nelson, CEC Girls Hockey Co-Captain for receiving the 2020 Herb Brooks Class 1A Award, and for the team taking second place in the 2020 Minnesota Class A Girls Hockey Tournament.
•Congratulations to Alaina Bennett for becoming the All Time CHS High Scorer in Girls Basketball.
•Congratulations to Kaden Crane for being chosen to participate in the 2020 High School All Star Boys Hockey game.
•Congratulations to Benjamin Soderstrom for scoring 1,000 career points in the game on Friday, February 21, 2020.
•Congratulations for making the Conference and All Conference 1st Team.
•Congratulations to Matthew Santkuyl for scoring 1,000 career points in the game on Friday, February 21, 2020.
•Congratulations for making the Conference and All Conference 2nd Team.
•Congratulations to Sawyer Thorman and Brynne Mickle for being crowned Homecoming King and Queen.
•Congratulations to our Carlton Robotics Team for placing 13th out of 63 Teams at Regionals. Thank you to Kat Nistler and Pat Day for Leading our Team. Thank you to Scott Bodin and Mike Harper for all their help during this event.
•Thank you to the Carlton Bulldog Spirit Club for painting our South Terrace letters.
Reports were given by South Terrace Elementary Principal/Activities Director Benjamin Midge, Community Education Director Daisy Rose, Indian Education Check and Connect Mentor Kevin Kot, Business Manager Norman Nelis, Superintendent/High School Principal Gwen Carman, Board Committee Reports by Gwen Carman.
MOTION by Chmielewski to approve the consent agenda with removal of 7.5:
•Approve the Minutes, February 18, 2020 School Board Meeting.
•Approve the Minutes, March 9, 2020 Committee of the Whole Meeting.
•Approve February payroll for a total of $365,736.79 and wires summative at $112,839.31.
•Approve the February finance checks in the amount of $125,373.47.
MOTION was supported by Gustafson. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-yea, Gustafson-yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 6-0.
MOTION by Lehto to approve the Government Relations Agreement Between Carlton Independent School District 93 and Jacobson, Magnuson, Anderson, and Halloran, P.C. was supported by Karp. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-nay, Gustafson-yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 5-1.
Discussed the 2nd Reading of Policies 419, 534.
MOTION by Gustafson to approve the resolution to accept the following donations:
•Approve the resolution to accept the $500.00 donation from the City of Carlton for Doomsday Dogs Robotics.
•Approve the resolution to accept the $400.00 donation from Irving Community Association for Bulldog Kids Care Youth Program.
MOTION was supported by Ojibway. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-yea, Gustafson-yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 6-0.
MOTION by Hagenah to approve the resolution Advocating for Local School Board Control as Recommended by MSBA was supported by Karp. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-nay, Gustafson-nay, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway yea. MOTION passed 4-2.
MOTION by Gustafson to approve the 2020-21 Tentative School Calendar was supported by Karp. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-yea, Gustafson-yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 6-0.
MOTION by Hagenah to approve the Carlton School District Pandemic Plan was supported by Karp. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-yea, Gustafson-yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 6-0.
MOTION by Gustafson to approve parental leave for Caylee Belden starting approximately Thursday, April 30, 2020 through the end of the 2019-2020 School Year was supported by Chmielewski. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-yea, Gustafson yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 6-0.
MOTION by Ojibway to approve the resignation of Denise Follett as Paraprofessional effective February 29, 2020 was supported by Gustafson. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-yea, Gustafson-yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 6-0.
MOTION by Hagenah to approve the resignation of Melissa Clark as Head Coach of Softball effective February 20, 2020 was supported by Gustafson. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-yea, Gustafson-yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 6-0.
Lehto called for a MOTION 3 times and no MOTION was made for the hiring of the Spring 2020 Coaches per Schedule C of the CEA Master Contract.
MOTION by Karp to approve the hire of Kevin Kot as Check and Connect Mentor effective February 25, 2020 through June 4, 2020 at approximately 40 hours per week, at the rate of $15.40 per hour was supported by Gustafson. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-yea, Gustafson-yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 6-0.
MOTION by Gustafson to approve the hire of Hope Butler as a full-time Paraprofessional hired at the Step 1 for 2019-2020 School Year at $14.31 per hour effective March 9, 2020 was supported by Karp. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-yea, Gustafson-yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 6-0.
MOTION by Hagenah to approve the resolution to place Maria Strom on 0.73 Unrequested Leave of Absence effective at the end of the 2019-20 school year was supported by Gustafson. A roll call vote was called: Chmielewski-nay, Gustafson-yea, Hagenah-yea, Karp-yea, Lehto-yea, Ojibway-yea. MOTION passed 5-1.
Ojibway made a motion to adjourn at 9:15 p.m. and there being no further business with a second from Gustafson the meeting adjourned by unanimous vote.
