Cross-country preview: Moose Lake-Willow River/Barnum

The Rebels return their core of runners from 2018 and will look to challenge in a competitive Section 7A; the season begins with the North Shore Challenge Thursday, Aug. 29 in Grand Marais.

Strength: “Both boys and girls varsity teams have most of their core returning from last year, which helps with leadership and transitioning new runners,” Whelan said. “The team aspect to the sport is also very important to our runners, which I feel brings out the best in our athletes.”

Biggest challenge: “Running in one of the top sections in the state is always a challenge, both as a team and for individuals looking to place high in the Section Meet in October,” Whelan said.

Jamey Malcomb has a been high school sports reporter for the Duluth News Tribune since October 2021. He spent the previous six years covering news and sports for the Lake County News-Chronicle in Two Harbors and the Cloquet Pine Journal. He graduated from the George Washington University in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in history and literature and also holds a master's degree in secondary English education from George Mason University.
