Walter Jafet Soukkala

Walter J. Soukkala, 91, of Sawyer, Minn., passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn.

He was born May 7, 1922, in Cloquet, Minn., to Henry and Maria (Wierrimaa) Soukkala. Walter served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and worked at Wood Conversion for over 35 years. He also farmed, enjoyed trapping, hunting, fishing and playing cribbage. Walter was an avid inventor and a "Master at Sling Shot."

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Katherine; brothers, Henry Jr., George, Art and Wilbert; and sisters, Sally, Mayme, Hilda, Esther and Bertha.

He is survived by his daughter, Shirley (Jim) Panger; sons, Douglas (Gloria) Soukkala and Rodney Soukkala; seven grandchildren, Troy, Monica (Jim), Chad (Melissa), Todd (Angie), Michelle (Keith), Katrina (Joe), and Kourtney (Justin); 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 10, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet, followed by a luncheon in the fellowship room.
