City Ski meet postponed, Barneløpet still on for Sunday

The Cloquet City Ski Meet (for ski jumpers and cross country skiers) has been postponed to Sunday, March 9, at Cloquet’s Pine Valley ski area.

If you can't wait that long, don't worry -- on Sunday, the Cloquet Sons of Norway Heimsyn Lodge and the Cloquet Ski Club invite children ages 3-10 to cross country ski in their first ever Barneløpet (Norwegian for “the children’s race”).

Sunday’s Barneløpet starts at 2 p.m. Sunday in Cloquet’s Veterans Park.

The Barneløpet (pronounced barn EH loo peh) is modeled after similar ski events in Norway and the Barnebirkie in Hayward, Wis. It is a noncompetitive ski event where everyone who finishes earns a blue ribbon and a flag. The event is free and some equipment will be available. Parents and grandparents may ski with their children. After the race, skiers and their families are invited to join the Sons of Norway in the Veterans Park Pavilion for cookies, cider and hot chocolate. For more information, call Barneløpet Coordinator Ken Jorgensen at 218-384-4202.

Participants (and their parents) are asked to dress appropriately for the weather, which is forecast to be between 0 and 10 degrees F. during the days this weekend.

The ski jumping competition in the City Ski Meet will begin at noon March 9, while the Nordic ski races start with the kids race at 2 p.m., including a 500-meter race, a 2K classic race and a 2.5K skate ski race. Adult and big kids races start at 2:30 p.m. and will include a 5.5K skate and/or classic race and an 11K skate or classic race. Fees are $10 for adults, $5 for high school students, $3 for kids races and $5 for each hill jumped. Registration runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
