Since this newspaper was founded in 1884, its journalists have written the first draft of history, including stories about conflicts and the local men and women who served in them.

According to the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs , more than 2,700 veterans live in Carlton County. They are family members, friends, neighbors and colleagues.

And it's because of them we enjoy the freedoms laid out in the Constitution. Of particular importance to us is the First Amendment, which guarantees the Freedom of Speech and the Press.

So today, we honor those who have served in the armed forces, whether in times of conflict or peace. We could never say thank you enough for your sacrifices. We also appreciate the family members who supported you and sacrificed, as well.
