REGULAR MEETING

The Esko Board of Education, Independent School District No. 99, Esko, Minnesota, held a school board meeting on Monday, March 19, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in the board conference room.

Members present: Julian Bertogliat, Jerry Frederick, Mark Nyholm, Todd Rengo, Jeff Salo, Margaret Sunnarborg, and Superintendent Aaron Fischer. Members absent: None with the exception that Todd Rengo left the meeting at 7:00 p.m. Mark Nyholm Clerk Pro Tem.

Call the Meeting to Order
Chairperson Julian Bertogliat called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.

Approval of Agenda
Moved by Jeff Salo, second by Margaret Sunnarborg to approve the agenda. Motion carried by unanimous vote.

Approval of Consent Agenda Items
Moved by Todd Rengo, second by Jerry Frederick to approve the Consent Agenda, pending Treasurer's review of checks dated 3/19/19:
Approve the minutes of the February 25, 2019 regular school board meeting.

Presentation: Community Education Annual Summary & Comparison 2018/2019
Community Education Director Michele Carlson explained the Community Education programs and noted that ECFE participation was up ten percent last year and another increase of ten percent this year. She also reported that next year the School Readiness (4-year-olds) schedule will align with the kindergarten schedule. Director Carlson explained that Preschool Screening is funded based on the age of the child served, with the largest amount received for three year olds. The Kids Plus program serves students ages 6 - 9. She reported that Cool Kids does have some openings for next fall and there are concerns regarding making adjustments to keep the pay rates competitive vs. the rising costs of doing business.

Member Todd Rengo left the meeting.

Presentation: SubZero Robotics
Robotics advisors Laura Zimny and Justin Scheider explained their request to attend the FIRST Championship in Detroit April 24-27, 2019, after taking first place out of 63 teams in Duluth last weekend.

Approve SubZero Robotics Trip to FIRST Championship
Moved by Mark Nyholm, second by Jeff Salo to approve the SubZero Robotics team to attend the FIRST Championship in Detroit, Michigan to be held April 24-27. 2019. Motion carried by the following vote:
Aye: Julian Bertogliat, Mark Nyholm, Jeff Salo, Margaret Sunnarborg with Jerry Frederick abstaining.

Presentation: Band Trip to New York City
Mr. Rich Mowers presented the itinerary for the band trip to New York City taking place March 23-29, 2019. This trip was previously approved by the Board. There will be 29 female and 11 male students making the trip. Mr. Mowers will be the only male chaperone and there will be two mothers going as chaperones.

Approve Esko Educational Center Projects
Moved by Jeff Salo, second by Margaret Sunnarborg to approve the following projects at the Esko Educational Center:
Rooftop unit in an amount not to exceed $52,900.
Basement unit in an amount not to exceed $27,500.
Awning over ramp in an amount not to exceed $7,600.
Repair junction box and electrical panels in an amount not to exceed $1,200.
Seal brick on east side of the building for approximately $500.
LED lighting for the remainder of the Community Education upstairs in an amount not to exceed $5,000.
Motion carried by unanimous vote.

Accept Letter of Resignation from Debra Ellefson
Moved by Jeff Salo, second by Mark Nyholm to accept a letter of resignation by retirement from Debra Ellefson effective June 7, 2019 with thanks for her service to the District and with approval to post for the resulting vacancy. Motion carried by unanimous vote.

Accept Letter of Resignation from Mary Anne Lee
Moved by Jeff Salo, second by Jerry Frederick to accept a letter of resignation by retirement from Mary Anne Lee effective at the end of this school year with thanks for her service to the District. Motion carried by unanimous vote.

Reports
Board Committee Reports:
Margaret Sunnarborg - Esko Educational Foundation meeting - they are looking for a race manager for the Kristin Burkholder 5k and are also looking for a new board member. She also attended a Community Education meeting and has been working with the Food Service department for meal enhancements. Next summer there will be a centennial celebration of the school.
Principals' Reports:
Elementary Principal Brian Harker reported:
The third quarter is ending this Friday.
This evening is Kindergarten Roundup for next year's students and their parents. They've also had two KinderCamps and will have another on Friday.
Secondary Principal Greg Hexum reported:
The high school is preparing for next year - working on scheduling and registration.
Testing season is underway.
Winter sports season is ending and spring sports are beginning.
Student on the robotics team will be out, boys basketball will also be out, knowledge bowl and music have also been out resulting in challenges for teachers.
Superintendent's Report:
Superintendent provided information from the Regional Profiles report that shows how Esko compares to other schools in the region in areas of enrollment, cost, and revenue information.

Congratulations and Commendations
SubZero Robotics for winning the regionals.
Boys Basketball for participation in the State Basketball Tournament.
Esko Band and Jazz Band for earning superior ratings.
Esko Choir for successful participation at the section/state competitions.

There being no further business, moved by Mark Nyholm, second by Jeff Salo to adjourn at 7:50 p.m. Motioned carried by unanimous vote.
