Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night … the unofficial motto of the United States Postal Service could certainly be adapted for the faithful kids who man the street corners before and after school across the nation, there to make sure their schoolmates cross safely to school each morning and afternoon.

Last Wednesday, May 11, members of the Cloquet VFW and Auxiliary rewarded school patrols from five different area schools (Esko Winterquist Elementary, Cloquet Middle School, Washington Elementary, Churchill Elementary and Queen of Peace school) for their service by inviting them to a pizza party at the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 2979 in West End Cloquet.

“We like to recognize the kids for the good things they do for our community,” said Lil LaVoy, Auxiliary treasurer (and photographer).

Each patrol was awarded a certificate and gold coin. Tony Jurek, who was a prisoner of war during the Korean War, explained the meaning behind the POW MIA table at the post. Cloquet Combined Honor Guard members Rich Chasse and Leo Grachow demonstrated a flag-folding ceremony.
